WHY DOES AUDIO POST PRODUCTION MATTER?
Picture this: you’ve just spent thousands of dollars on a great production. It could be a commercial, an animated show, podcast, live-action film or TV show, video game—anything. You captured the incredible performances of your actors, the visuals are beautiful, and now it’s time to release it. Well, hold on… what if your audience can’t hear it?
What if the visuals fall flat because they’re not reinforced with sound design or foley? What if your actor stumbled on your favorite take and you need to re-record? All of these things are CRITICAL to a polished, professional production. The human ear is brilliantly attuned to sound, and even an untrained ear will quickly identify sounds that are unnatural, or worse, low-quality. When they do, whatever they’re watching, listening to, or enjoying will swiftly be brought down to that level, leaving them with a perception of your business as sub-par, low quality, and ultimately, could drive them to a competitor.
Sound design ensures your production comes alive, immersing the audience in your world. ADR ensures your actors’ lines are recorded cleanly. Mixing unifies, enhances, and brings full fidelity, clarity, and impact so your show, commercial, or message is heard perfectly—ensuring an audience will engage and, ultimately, move the needle.

WHAT IS AUDIO POST PRODUCTION?
Audio post production is the process of using sound design and audio mixing to bring a production, whether visual, or audio-only, to life. Sound design uses sound effects, re-recording, reverbs, delays, and more to create an atmosphere or sonic landscape. Mixing utilizes EQ, compression, volume automation, and more to balance the audio in a production for perfect clarity, impact, and audience immersion.
WHAT IS SOUND DESIGN?
Sound design is the process of using sounds, either pre-recorded samples, new recordings (foley), and sound effects like reverb, delay, EQ, and compression to create an immersive audio soundscape to enhance a visual or audio project.
For non-visual mediums, like radio or podcasts, sound design is incredibly important to making sure that a scene, commercial or idea comes to life.
For visual mediums like commercials, explainer videos, B2B marketing, TV shows, films, short films and digital ads, sound design is the key ingredient to making sure that the visuals are represented accurately and in line with a directors vision to enhance what is on-screen.
Sound design is one of the most important elements in any project to make sure that it is professional, of high quality, effective and impactful.
WHAT IS AUDIO MIXING?
Audio mixing, or more often known as just “mixing”, is the process of using equalization (EQ), compression, volume automation, limiting, saturation, and effects, to unify all audio elements of a project or production. It creates a cohesive audio production that is the final key step to creating a polished piece of work.
Whether for visual or audio-only mediums, a professional, outstanding mix can be the difference between connecting with an audience, or having them view your project or product as subpar quality.
The quickest way to make any audience perceive your product as “low quality” is to have an amateur mix. When people can’t hear the dialogue or voiceover, when the sound design elements overpower the vocals, big hits aren’t impactful in a trailer, or or there’s just not enough presence of the background atmosphere to make things come alive, the audience immediately recognizes that this doesn’t sound right. Our ears are so attuned to proper, high-fidelity mixes that to go without one, is a sure fire way to make them view your project or product as a lessor quality.
If you want your project to compete with top-of-the-line productions that they’ll potentially be featured next to, whether in a commercial break, at a short film festival, or online in a sea of talented filmmakers, a crisp, clear, punchy and impactful mix is a must.
WHAT IS DIALOGUE EDITING?
Dialogue editing is the process of cleaning up, volume leveling, smoothing out and time adjusting dialogue so that it is clear, clean, and synchronized with picture. This is the stage in audio post production that dialogue and/or voiceover is polished for a sound mixer to be able to finish mixing a project.
Dialogue editing can be done for film, television, videogames, podcasts, commercials, radio advertising and any other form of audio or visual medium that requires dialogue and speaking.
WHAT IS ADR/DUBBING?
ADR and dubbing are both similar forms of audio recording, where an actor or voice actor will record over an existing piece of audio or dialogue that either isn’t working, wasn’t recorded properly, or was in a different language.
ADR is typically done as an in-studio recording as a part of the post audio process, when an actor’s lines were not captured properly on-set. This can be due to weather conditions, the particular scene location (for example talking in a convertible or on top of a tall, windy building), the actors performance or any number of factors. Regardless of the situation, an actor will typically come into a controlled recording studio like Silverside Recording, and will re-record their dialogue while watching the footage on-screen. They will attempt to synchronize their new performance with the old so it feels as if the audio was recorded on location. A mixer will then mix the new audio into the production for a seamless listening experience.
Dubbing is typically done when an actor or more often, voice actor, is recording the “dub” of a foreign language TV show. This process is also known as “localization”. It’s fairly common in the animated world, for example: a Japanese Anime show getting dubbed into english.
WHAT IS MASTERING?
Mastering is the final step of any audio post production process, done after mixing, where a mastering engineer will use a variety of tools including: equalization (EQ), compression, volume automation, limiting and saturation to finalize a piece of audio for broadcast, release and/or distribution.
It also brings the audio to commercial levels as required based on the different specifications of each medium, takes into account certain things like the C.A.L.M. act, and makes sure the audio will be heard similarly across different speakers and listening methods.
WHAT IS FOLEY?
Foley is the a specific type of in-studio recording that is done to create a custom atmosphere and soundscape or sound design during the audio post production process. Typically done with a foley “pit”, a foley artist will have a large variety of tools and objects to re-create sound for on-camera visuals so that it is clearer, punchier and overall higher fidelity, thus creating a more immersive sound design that is tailored to a director’s vision with new, organic sounds.
